Getaway Cabin at Willow River
Brilliant! The concept of the Getaway Cabins is to have easy access to nature. Located throughout the country, within a couple of hours of major cities, the cabins have everything you need for an impromptu retreat and they are dog-friendly.
We carve out a night to check out the Getaway Cabins located in Willow River, MN just 1.5 hours north of Minneapolis. We easily find a cluster of small cabins nestled among birch and pine trees. The Kettle River winds through the land, making for some great hiking.
No detail is overlooked - s’more kits, olive oil, salt and pepper, pots and pans, dishware, utensils, matches, flashlight, soap, a leash line for dogs…
Our cabin is clean and modern with 2 queen-sized beds with nice linens. There is heat and AC, a little bathroom with a hot shower, and a toilet. The kitchen is equipped with everything we need to cook, including a small fridge, cooktop, and sink with drinking water.
We get our fire going right away so we will have a good bed of coals to cook over.
*firewood is sold at the cabins
Tonight our snack is a cheese board. I like to stop by Whole Foods and pick up their little end-cuts of cheese. That way we can try a variety of cheese for just a few dollars each.
We bring a cast-iron pan to use over the fire. While pots and pans are provided in the cabins, they are for indoor use only.
Tonight we make a Campfire Coconut Curry with Sweet Potatoes and Ginger. We grill some naan over the fire as well and heat up some turmeric rice. Spicy and satisfying, we eat around the fire.
The next morning we make instant coffee in the cabin. A tea kettle is provided, but no coffee pot. It’s a quiet morning and we explore the hiking trails on site. It’s a lovely way to start the day.
For breakfast, we use the kitchen in the cabin to make our version of Pajeon, a Korean Scallion Pancake, topped with fried chili oil.
Being in nature, cooking over a fire, and taking a break from technology, we are reset and energized.
On our way, just 14 miles from the cabins, we stopped by Kettle River: Banning State Park. We hike along the Kettle River and admire the rock formations and waterfall.
